Mechanic Apprentice  

Job Description:
Maintains, repairs, and overhauls heavy vehicles and industrial equipment. Interprets work orders and technical manuals; keeps equipment cleaned, lubricated and maintained; diagnoses faults or malfunctions; adjusts equipment and repairs or replaces defective parts, components or systems. Ensures that the work done meets manufacturers’ specifications and legislated regulations. This trade follows a 4-year apprenticeship program; journeyman status requires a valid certificate of qualification issued by the appropriate provincial or federal authority. Journeyman may supervise apprentice mechanics.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs repairs and maintenance on heavy trucks and other vehicles or heavy equipment to maximize safe and productive operations.
  • Typical repairs include but are not limited to, routine maintenance and repairing engines chassis and body components, hydraulic cylinders, brake systems, suspension systems, cooling systems, wheels and tires.
  • Road tests vehicles to troubleshoot problems and/or test repairs to ensure proper and safe completion.
  • Inspects equipment and/or trucks for condition, operations, parts and fluid levels, differentials, final drives, pump drives, and hubs.
  • Reads and interprets vehicle condition reports, and/or repair orders, communicates with supervisor and driver for clarification of problems. May discuss preventative techniques with drivers to minimize future repairs.
  • Makes emergency road calls to make repairs on trucks that break down while driving a collection route.
  • Uses a large array of hand and power tools.
  • Pushes or pulls large tool box.
  • Cleans parts and tools with chemical solvents.

Requirements and Qualifications:

  • 2-3 years of verifiable Diesel Truck/Heavy Equipment experience
  • Solid knowledge of air brakes and Hydraulics repair
  • Computer diagnostic experience would be an asset.
  • Availability to do shift work as per business needs
  • Position requires that you have your own tools.

  • A and B Services Brakes

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • Dexterity for handling small parts and tools in tight spaces.
  • Sufficient strength for handling larger parts and tools.
  • Pushing, pulling, and reaching above/at/below shoulder, standing stooping, crouching, bending, walking, crawling, kneeling, carrying lifting 10-100 lbs.
  • Visually inspects vehicles and parts; adequate hearing.
  • Able to work utilizing safety glasses, steel-toed work shoes, uniform and hearing protection.
  • Able to climb steps and ladders.
  • Work performed indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Subjected to loud noises, vibrations, hardworking surfaces, lubricants and chemicals, fumes, dirt and inherent hazards of mechanic work.

Batching Plant Operator

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Operate batching system to produce wet/dry cast concrete to correct specification
  • Be able to spot check concrete & make adjustments to recipes where necessary
  • Keep stocks up to date, order materials such as cement, aggregates & admixtures
  • Ensure the batching plant area is kept in a clean and tidy condition at all times
  • Monitor maintenance of Batching Plant
  • Receive and process orders for aggregate and additives for precast concrete products when required
  • Operation of plant & machinery when required & trained to do so
  • Ensure compliance with the Company’s policies including Health & Safety
  • Other reasonable duties as requested by management
  • May require the ability to repair/clean machinery
  • Maintain accurate and current reports as required


  • Fluent in English
  • Experience in Batching
  • Be computer literate with experience of all Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel
  • Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize work
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to manage a number of tasks concurrently
  • Effective telephone manner
  • Ability to work flexibly, on own initiative and as part of a team
  • Ability to work to a high level of accuracy
  • A willingness to undertake training as required
  • A willingness to work shift work and overtime (if needed)
